Wowsers!

Welcome to Ning to BuddyPress!

In light of today’s announcement on the Ning website, several volunteers have stepped up to start coding tools to help transition your existing Ning data to a BuddyPress powered WordPress installation.

I’m going to stay on top of things as they develop so there is an unofficial resource for everyone that’s looking for help transitioning.

I’m thankful of this change, because I’ve been looking for a solution to migrate away from Ning for ages, and this has pretty much prompted a global requirement for such a solution.

I think this could be BuddyPress’s “Moveable Type” moment. Just as Moveable Type’s change in licensing was a boost for WordPress, Ning’s move away from the freeium model to the premium business model could be a boon to BuddyPress.

However, while I do not think it is very difficult to install WordPress and BuddyPress on an inexpensive web host, many Ning users may prefer a hosted solution similar to Ning even though they may be somewhat skittish after this latest experience with Ning. This could be an opportunity for someone to step into Ning’s shoes and offer hosting plans similar to WordPress.com, maybe even Automattic themselves. Is BuddyPress.com around the corner?

  5. P.S. Ed, BuddyPress.com makes a ton of sense… I’d use it, and it would fill an important niche. While hosting your own network is the best idea, especially for a business, and very easy/cheap to boot, most current Ning users probably do want a hosted option. I currently use wordpress.com while building my small business website – and the reason I do is because I can switch over to wordpress.org seamlessly when my own site is up and running – can’t say that about any of the other blog hosting sites, can ya? BuddyPress would be a similar boon to the small business owner or hobby-business turned entrepreneur folks.

  6. Hi,

I just visited your website and noticed that you don’t have a one-on-one footer chat bar for your users.

I would like to introduce you to CometChat – a Facebook style floating chat bar. CometChat includes some great features such as video chat and 2-player games. It also integrates seamlessly with your website.

I can assure you that your users will spend more time on your website once you get CometChat. Do have a look at our website for more information:

Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any queries whatsoever.

    Warm Regards,

    Christine Beck
